The Path of a Lifelong Learner

It all started with my father. A hardworking man who made a living for his family through farming. He never turned down a question, in fact he encouraged them. He instilled in me the courage to question what I did not know and what I was interested in.

In the first grade I was introduced to the school librarian. At the time I did not know the impact she would have on my life. She taught me the importance of literature. She was always available to answer my questions and suggest a good book. Because of her I was able to discover my love of reading.

In 2011 I graduated from High School. I had the privilege of learning from many different educators, but one in particular had a profound impact on me. Her name was Ms. Clark and she was my anatomy and physiology teacher. She always had a smile and was willing to help in any way. It was because of her that I decided to go into the nursing profession.

It was my second semester of college when I was put on academic probation. I can still remember the awful feeling I got when I read the letter explaining my GPA had fallen below the acceptable percentage. This is when I came to the realization that nursing might not be for me. I had lost focus and wasn’t interested in any of the classes I was taking. I took a step back and after a lot of thought decided to change my major to education.

This past year I began working in a high needs Special Education classroom. It reassured me that I was on the right path. I have learned so much from the students I have had the opportunity to work with, and hope they can say the same. I have laughed with them and cried with them. I have met so many amazing people with so much knowledge to offer. My path is just beginning and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

  1. Danielle,
I really enjoyed reading your blog. I also have a passion for the Special education classroom. Although at times it is challenging the job is very rewarding. I love how you describe how emotionally connected you are to your students. You can tell that you are invested in seeing them succeed.

    1. Thanks Charity. I agree teaching Special Education can be very challenging at times especially if you don’t yet know how to approach a situation, but in the end it is always worth it. Although I have only been in my current classroom for a year I have built a relationship with many of the students and this makes the time we spend together so much better for both of us.

  2. Thank You. Nursing definitely wasn’t for me but I was able to learn so much from the experience and there has been several times I was thankful for the knowledge I gained. I also believe that teaching is the perfect fit for me.

  3. You are definitely in the right place, if you have experience that passion with your students and those around you to help you, I think you found your fit! I was a nursing major as well, in nursing school, and I got a 73 on a final and needed a 74 to continue on. I can imagine your feelings when you read your GPA letter because I remember that same feeling when they told me I couldn’t go on, I think I cried for like 5 hours! I couldn’t even fathom what I was going to do next because all of my life this is all I ever wanted to do, so like you I really had to take a step back, take a good long hard look at my life and reevaluate what I was going to do next. Good luck on your future! You’ll be great!
